Meet Jobie
Jobie Yip,
UX/UI Designer
Introducing… Jobie Yip, our UX/UI Designer at IRIS, who is based in London, UK.
Get to know Jobie as she shares insights into her background, her life at IRIS and what she enjoys getting up to in her spare time…
What do you do and how long have you worked at IRIS?
“I’ve been a UX/UI Designer at IRIS for over 8 months.”
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
‘‘Coffee is always the first thing I need!”
What do you love about working at IRIS?
“The people here are incredibly kind and always strive to improve. The team communicates well and is open to providing constructive feedback when needed.”
What’s your background?
‘‘I have a background in design and journalism. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I studied Graphic Design (Bachelor’s) and City Design & Social Science (Master’s) in London. After graduating, I worked in journalism in Hong Kong before moving back to London to pursue my career.’’
What is one of the most interesting tasks/projects you’ve worked on at IRIS?
‘‘One of the most interesting projects was the allergen filter, my very first task at IRIS. We needed to significantly improve it to make it both user-friendly and accurate. When dealing with allergy safety, precision is critical, so it was a challenging yet fascinating task.
The feature is currently in the development stage, with improvements underway. I’m also working on exciting future projects that I’ll share later!’’
What’s the best thing about working at IRIS?
“The transparent work environment. The monthly Lunch and Learn sessions are a great way to understand the company and collaborate with different teams.”
What sets IRIS [or your department] apart from other companies?
‘‘IRIS stands out for its culture of sharing and helping. As a UX/UI Designer, I frequently gather feedback from clients, users, and internal teams, and everyone is welcoming and eager to contribute.’’
If you could switch jobs with someone, who would it be?
‘‘I love being a UX/UI Designer, so I wouldn’t switch! Haha.”
What did you want to do when you were growing up?
‘‘As a child, I wanted to be a fashion designer, like my parents. As I grew older, I realised I’m passionate about solving problems and understanding human behaviour.
UX/UI design combines both, blending creativity and aesthetics with problem-solving - the only constant has been my love for design.’’
What inspires you about working in hospitality?
“Hospitality is a diverse and inclusive sector that serves all kinds of people. In my role, accessibility is always top of mind to ensure we meet every user’s needs.’’
What is your favourite hobby?
“Exploring restaurants in London is a major past time when I’m off work, along with playing tennis during the short summer season.”
What puts a smile on your face/makes you happy?
“Meeting my friend’s dog! Isn’t she cute?
What advice would you give anyone looking to join IRIS?
“Be customer-service oriented and initiate problem-solving to all of your clients.”
What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?
“Personally, co-founding an urban and transport planning advocacy group for Hong Kong with my friends is my greatest achievement.
Contributing my UX design knowledge and graphic design skills to propose better streets for my hometown has been incredibly rewarding.”
What is your guilty pleasure?
“Samyang Buldak Ramen - it’s my go-to treat when I’m enjoying some me-time alone.”
When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?
“When my best friend and I reminisced about our high school days.”
